My latest way to create albums

Some philatelists make album leaves as a way of organizing collection. I usually make album leaves only for the exhibit works.  A bitter experience in creating leaves by hand a long time ago made me pursue a way to create album leaves easily with computers and printers since early 1990's and I'd like to show you my latest way to create leaves.

(1) Use a software for layouting
It's useless to say which software is good because theere're not only windows but mac. What is important , I think , is to use a software for layouting.

Layout software can specify the printing points like DTP and design software. Otherwise, you can't get the same printing result with different computers and printers. This is why I don't recommend MS-Excel and MS-Word.

(2) SCAN materials and place them into a leaf.
If you place stamps and covers on the leaf, you can understand how the work will be. However, it is dangerous because there's a possibility to damage materials.

Thus, I scan all the materials and don't use the genuine stamps and covers for making leaves. What is important is to scan the materials as low resolution as possible. 72 DPI is enough and you don't need 600 DPI at all. 600DPI makes the file size of leaves heaby as well as harm stamps by lighting stamps heavily for a minute.

The scanned images can be cut at some software (for ex. Preview in Mac.) and you can place it on the digital leaves.

 (3) A3 color printing of 16 in 1.
In order to be aware of 4 x4 leaves in one frame, I think it's better to print the color image of 4x4 leaves on A3 paper. "16 in 1" is also costless and even 8 Frames cost you around $4. Please compare the printing image with iPhone at the right image.

I made eight frames of my exhibit work of German States newly and it took me only a three days!

Flowers of the 47 prefectures (80 yen par value) Example sent to Germany EMS

As a matter of fact, I like the super modern stamps. I don't think no other country in the world ever issued such a tremendas math volume of postage stamps than in Japan these days.

But becuase so many stamps issued in one year, even philatelist lost love for the designs of each stamps and thus I don't hesitate to make them into used stamps or philatelic covers with cancellation. I don't think to get all of them, some times I forgot to make philatelic materials  but as there're PHILANIPPON2011 this July, I went to the post office every day and got many new commemorative stamps in my hand this summer.

What I feel interesting in making philatelic materials is make some special usage covers such as Express or Registered. Double weight and more is also interesting and parcels is very interesting these days. Like classic stamps, the destination to foreign country is always nice, I think. This August I tried to send EMS to myself staying in Germany and I got a nice example. Show you.

Top three rows of 2011 Japan Flowers of the 47 prefectures (80 yen par value) at 2400 yen. It is a fee for EMS to Germany weight 710gram, though it was below 700gram when calculated in the post office (so the fee is 2200 yen, too much 200yen) , sent on Aug. 25th, 2011 with the alphabetical roller cancellation of GAIENMAE post office (Minato-ku)I think it becomes a nice cover , though I usually don't ask the postman how to cancel.

Souvenir sold at the Blue Mauritius Stamp Exhibition, Berlin

This post will be the last one about the Blue Mauritius Post Office stamps exhibition. I'd like to Introduction you some goods sold there.

I was presented when I got back from a ceremony on Sep.1st, instead of non-selling goods, this "stamp in stamp" is for sale at the shop.

They also used the commemoration cancellation. I think the date is interesting. The Blue Mauritius stamp exhibition starts on Sep. 2nd as described in the commemoration cancellation, however the first day of cancellation is Sep. 1st. Is it used only in the museum on the first day?

What I disappointed to buy is this post-it goods. There is two pence blue on the cover with nothing but white paper in it. It cost only a few euro, but I don't want it.

What I enjoyed is again fake of mint Post Office stamps. It costs me 15 euro but I bought two copies.

I think I can cut it out later to make one leaf collection with a fake Bordeaux cover I showed you in my past blog post.

Bordeaux 1847 Mauritius cover

Today I show you the goods I got at the Blue Mauritius show. The famous Bordeaux cover franking two kinds of Mauritius Post Office stamps!

Someone found it in my last blog, but this is a private reprint of the famous cover and is sold for 10 EUR at the museum shop in the communication museum, Berlin. Franking two kinds of 1847, Post Office stamps, cancelled with black rectangular PENNY POST cancellation of Port Louis, sent on Oct. 4th, 1847 and arrived at Bordeaux on Dec. 28th. This is the only cover franking two kinds of the stamps.

This cover was owned by Mr.Lichtenstein, Mr.Hind and Mr. Kanai. Mr. Kanai bought it for million USD in 1971 and sold it for 3.8million USD in 1988. The owner now get it for around the same price in 1993. I think there is a possibility the owner is an investor.
By the way because this is a private reprint manufactured recently, you can not allowed to show one on the competitive stamp exhibition. It is probable more than ten thousand copies are manufactured, it is also not rare at all. But I like this one because it is manufactured very well with the documents of the cover(you can see the letter), stamps are made by themselves and attached to the envelope and cancelled.
I don't think no regular philatelist will be cheated by this cover because it is too much popular and is estimated several million. So philatelists can only get the happiness with the rare item or the knowledge .

Mauritius Post Office Stamp Exhibition

There is a stamp event named "the Blue Mauritius" in Communicateion museum in Berlin until Sep. 25th, 2011.This exhibition shows only 2 kinds of Post Office stamps of Mauritius. I was invited to both of the opening event (Sep. 1st) and lecture "collokium" (Sep. 2nd) , so I'll write them on this blog.

"All the Stamps of the World - First Decade - " shows you Mauritius as the 8th first country issueing the stamps, though far away from the Continent where philatelists gather, it took several month for the philatelists to find this first issue of the stamps in Mauritius. That is why only 26 stamps exists in the world including all the mint, used, covers of the 2 stamps.

The existing number of several stamps are one or two and much less than this Mauritius Post Office stamps, however, this one is very very popular among the philatelists. The reason I think is 1) this is a classical stamp 2)no doubt for the issue itself 3)no overprinted stamps, so no doubt of forged overprint. The estimate value is one million euro in used condition, 3to6million for covers. Wealthy philatelists used to have one before, however when they have to sell them, philatelic museums or non-philatelist investors started to get them. So it is not so easy to see it in private market.

This exhibition show 18 stamps out of 26 existing Post Office stamps and I think this number is first and probably the last. I enjoyed seeing stamps very much, I also had a fun in getting the guidebook of this show. It listed all this 18 stamps in English &German with many photoes. You can enjoy how each Post Office stamps are looked for and some other stories like reprint of this stamp.

Japan 2011 Peter Rabbit Stamps part.2

Mr. Morio Suzuki, a friend of mine, philatelist says the cancellations used at Japanese post offices now are very fascinating, so I posted Peter rabbit covers at two post offices as you see.

from the left. Meguro (failed), Meguro bilingual machine cancellation, Ginza new type machine cancellation

I used to collect bilingual machine cancellation eagerly in 1990's, though I have no knowledge of my absent period of 20 years from philately.
They are going to go away, I mean becoming extinct. So it's a good time to start collecting again.

Even the new cancellation of Ginza post office has many varieties because of the repeated minor improvements.

I think we need to write more information in English to fascinate people for Japanese modern philately.

2011 Japan Peter Rabbit Stamps

Japan Post issued Peter Rabit stamps on Mar. 3rd 2011. It is welcomed to non-philatelists, though we philatelists have a difficulty to get all the stamps in used condition because the number issued is crazy 20.As it is next to impossible to get all of them without using stamps by myself, I using it addressed to me when I go travelling in Japan.

I got recently the post cards I used at Sendai on July 24th, the day Japanese Professional Baseball All Star Game in Sendai. All of them are tied with clear cancellations , so I'm very happy. As I post them at two different posts, there're two type of time information in cancellations , "12-18","18-24". I have also sent to the address in Europe, I'm willing to get them soon.

There're no hotel rooms in Sendai because of the reconstruction after the disaster, I went back to Tokyo at night.

Scenic cancellation of Top of the Mt. Fuji Post Office

Among scenic cancellations, that of Top of the Mt. Fuji Post Office is one of the popular one. It is not so rare because you can get it by sending stamps to the post office. However, isn't it still usual if the sender is an CEO of Dentsu, the biggest promotion company in Japan?

If you understand what I mean, you're so involved in Japanese promotion business. Dentsu is very famous for their young staff's Mt.Fuji marathon and they send summer greeting cards from the top of the Mt.Fuji post office every year. They recruits many athlete from various university, so there're plenty of runners every year.

As far as I know, Dentsu started this event when the era was "SHOWA", so they knew what the merit of scenic cancellation.

I made a first exhibit at the internaional philatelic exhibition.

67 1856 MECKLENBURG-SCHWERIN 1/4 schilling stamp, block of 4My exhibition work at PHILANIPPON2011 was my first participate to an international stamp competition. As I lost my fervoer on philately when I was young just because I hate straitjacketed thinking of those days , I don't have good impressions on stamp conmpetition when I restart philately four years ago.

But I don't think it good to hate stamp competition without an experience of some competition. That's why I got involved in stamp competition, though I'm just a general collector and not good at specialized collection. As a resullt, I came to the conclusion that stamp competition is indispensable as well as not required to everyone.

This thought has been a basic thought in western countries where philately was born. There're many famous collector who don't make a competitive exhibit works. Sometimes there're famous collector who don't make an album pages!! Japanese philatelists don't know this essence thirty years ago and gave to junior collectors wrong thought such as "He is not a philatelist just because he don't make an album page". This mistake coused the weakness of today's philatelic situation in Japan.

I think philately is very similart to those sports such as Figure Skate, Synchronized Swimming and Flying point of Ski Jump. Because both of them are judged by juries. Like these sports, philately has an international society and have an international rules and fight on it. The international comittee develops juries to prevent wrong judges people by people. Rule is sometimes changed by the comittee.

It is very important, however, these comittee don't disdain those people who don't join the competition. It is same in Philately. This time I feel it very much to meet the people of F.I.P.

So the attitude to hate a competitive stamp show is as bad as the attitude to hate a philatelist who don't make an album page and force them to do so. The only thing what I hate is a narrow pocket and I don't want any philatelists to feel what he's doing is valueless. Now Japanese philatelic magazine has made a great progress and they have a wide pocket now. It's a good time!

I started making exhibit works just one and a half years ago, I'm now very much involved in it because of its attractiveness. Of course I have an experience to get worse point than I thought, but I should understand the rule more because it is judged strictly. So I appreciate very much to all the people who runs Philanippon such as Commissioner, Judges, Staff and Volunteers.

Stamp tells the history of Hong Kong

66
Mr.Yosuke Naito, I met him when we're Jr. high school students, has been writing so many books recently and has made a great contribution to philately.

I happened to meet him at a stamp market in Tokyo this May after "one fourth centuries"! There I got some his writings with his own autographs. I'd like to write impressions about them without any falatteries. As I'm already philatelist and involved in general collections all over the world, "The best 100 Japanese stamps" is not for me , I think, though of course it is still a very good writings to the non-philatelic people.
I like "Hong Kong" much better and I feel very excited page by page when I read it.

Hong Kong is one of the best three cities in the world for me. No.1 changes as time goes by, Zurich, Berlin, Paris, Tokyo, Hakata and Seoul sometimes. I use to like Singapore but is under 6 now. By the way I did not know much about the history of Hong Kong. So I feel very excited to see its history of Before the Great Britain, British Colonies, Br to China time, China time and recent development. Mr.Naito shows all the history only by philatelic materials.

Mr.Naito is famous as an exhibitor of International stamp show, that's why his story is very good for us, reader, but I still feel excited to see such a dramatic history can be told only by phiatelic materials. I heard he also tried to write a book of Macau. I'd like to try it during this summer vacation.

JAPAN 2011 Rose in Versailles stamps to Paris

65 EKINAI 980 12 VI 11 12-18 JAPAN

This is the postcard with Japan 2011 Rose in Versailles stamps posted at Sendai Station Post Office.

Because this stamps are based on a Japanese comic Rose in Versailles (France Revolution) , I really want something with the destination of Paris. I made two copies, but as I thought the cancellation does not tie to the postcard. So I think it was good to have 10 yen definitive stamp tied to the postcard.

However, it is not so interesting to collect Super Modern covers because there are no arrival cancellations.

2011 Japan Postcards with East-Japan Earthquake donations addressed to Germany

Now I have nothing to do about PHILANIPPON2011 after a few day's cleaning.

I joined it as both of an exhibitor and a stand holder, I had much fun than ever, though I can not do anything else so far this year. So I had been thinking I start something new from this August and as one of them, I decided to start collecting Japanese stamps. I have already bought some good lots and made some interesting philatelic covers at the post office.

Shown is a post card issued this year with East Japan Earthquake Donations. I happened to go to Sendai, the disastered area this June, I sent a post card to Germany.

A friend of mine living in Sendai tells me people should not quit travelling to Sendai and coming more than usual to spend money and that makes the economy of disastered area better. So I'd like to find more time to go there and get stamps and some fruits as a gift there.

About PANDA 1/2

A guide of Yokohama This article is one of the contents of Philatelic Jouranl, which stampedia project published this April. I heard the rumor of not a few philatelist quit coming to PHILANIPPON2011 after the disaster and hoped to give them a relief of the safety of the central Japan. The sales number of Philatelic Journal outside of Japan is only 300 copies, so it might be very small to promote PHILANIPPON2011, we are going to show you onlline.

I'm programming stampedia Exhibition and thinking about the recommended specifications of scanning the leaves

As I told you in the article "Digital Philately makes you happier!" of "stampedia Philatelic Journal" , I' m now programming stampedia Exhibition. What I worried about is recommended specifications of scanning the leaves.
Higher DPI is not always good because file size becomes bigger with higher DPI and it makes user unhappy. So this is important and I decided to show you the experimental results. What I scan for this experimental is the leaf of "Japan 1966 60Yen definitive" stamps and covers. I made this leaf a quarter century ago without PC.

Experimental; scan the same leaf in three different conditions.
1)Actual size 72DPI     =>   157kb
2)Actual size 200DPI    =>   852kb
3)Actual size 300DPI    =>  1,972kb

44

What is shown above is the image of leaf scanned in the condition 1 (72DPI) The other images scanned otherwise is no more better than this one, so 72DPI is enough unless you magnify the images. What is better about 72DPI is its small file size (20% of condition 2 (200 DPI), 8% of condition 3(300 DPI)) Various people come to see stampedia Exhibition by many ways, so the difference of file size is the difference of display speed.

But this is not the conclusion of this blog post. In traditional stamp exhibitions, you want to see the stamps closer if you find something rare or interesting! It is same in virtual exhibition.Next I show you how the image becomes when you magnify them.

45 magnify 72DPI46 magnify 200DPI

Left: magnify 72 DPI and Right: magnify 200DPI. 72DPI is useless if you want to magnify them while 200DPI is ok.

48 49

Let's magnify more! Upper; magnify 200DPI and Lower; magnify 300DPI. You can find the difference if you see the trees backe of the building.

It's just the experimental and I've not decided the recommended specification. The image of magnifying 300 DPI is much better than I thought while the file size is also much bigger. I'd like to think and hear your opinion for a while.

How to store your exhibition-leavs at home

Almost everyone uses exhibition-leaves (without holes and equal margins) instead of ordinaly leaves (with holes leftside , non-equal margins) when they make a leaves for some exhibition. The reason is mainly beauty reasons and leaves are not good-looking when they have holes or non-equal margins.

Problems occur after the return of the leaves. You can't store them in the album because they don't have any holes. You need to get transparent bags with holes , but not easy to find it.

1.Leaf-store case

Some manufacturers are selling Leaf-store cases but I think it is useless. If you use it upright, weight gives negative impact to leaves. If you use it layed, all the weight of the other leaves are on the bottom leaf and it is very bad for the stamps.

2.Use stationery

Some non-philatelic monaufacturers makes good stationeries. But when you use them for storing leaves, unti-dust cases are necessary. Without them, dust blacks your stamps and leaves. You can get only one stationery with dust case in Japan and 132-5C of Kingu-Jimu is it with 100 pockets. You can get one at 3,220Yen at E-commerce site "ASUKURU".

When you store leaves into this products, you shuold be careful not to press stamps and covers.

3.Bosutoku Wide Album Kuria Pocket

This products are not so popular but I think it's the best way. 800Yen for 20 bags. 3,200Yen for 5frames. Even Frank Godden leaves can be stored!

The first time in the world, QR codes displayed in the stamp exhibition!

It's been 3 years and half since I start collecting stamps again. During the first two years I've been to serveral philatelic exhibiton without seeing any leaves displayed there. I see leaves now just because I started to exhibit my collection , however I feel something lazy on seeing leaves.I'de like to say this is not fault of leaves but of how exhibitions are displayed.

  1. 1 frame is 16 leaves and vertically 4 lines. You should move your head and eyes and walk a long distance to see all the exhibits.

  2. Why is it so dark? Prevent stamps from light? Just energy savings?

  3. It is natural to provide something like voice-guidance in museums while stamp exhibition don't. It is hard to enjoy seeing leaves without knowledge of stamps or exhibitors.

  4. The majority of people don't see any leaves and go home in big stamp exhibitions.

In old days when postal authorities are not privatizated, they payed money for the stamp exhibition and thus it is needed that exhibitions are superior to dealer shops. But it changes except in emerging countries. The space for exhibitions becomes smaller because it does not earn money and majority of people don't see leaves. For example, in London 2010, the committee decided to give half space needed for exhibitions and change all the exhibits on the intermediate day. The traditional way of exhibition is no longer very luxury style.

I don't think the leaves and stamps exhibitied are poor. I've got interested in some leaves and stamps when I can hear the guidance from my philatelic friends. Many non-philatelic museum provide multilingual-voice-guidance to the people. I found very wonderful improvement in the last All Japan Stamp Exhibition. This is the first trial in the world, I think.

    41 42

As you can see, there's a QR code. This is an IT and when you check it with your mobile phone , you can get some comment of jury. I hope this trial goes much more in the Philanippon2011. I'd like to show you more points.

    1. Bilingual please! English is needed at least.

    2. Please understand more and more people start using smart phone such as iPhone.

    3. Jury's comment is good, we need comments of exhibitors also.

    4. Comment is good, we are happier with movies.

    5. Why don't you start board system and get comments from visitors?

I know 4&5 are premature, however please fulfill 1,2 and 3. and Philanippon2011 will be the first improved Int'l stamp exhibition.

Anyway, I'm happy to know this is a beginning of improvement. I like it!

We've started Stampedia Japanese Version!!!!

We "Stampedia project" are thinking what we can do for the people in Tohoku&Ibaragi damaged from terrible earthquake and TUNAMI. I didn't feel like doing anything myself for several days after the disaster though I don't living in that area. I know it is too early talking about reconstruction, but the days will come for the people in Tohoku and Ibaragi to pursue hope in hobby. So we decided to release Stampedia Japanese version.

To be honest, the language "Japanese " is quite different from the other languages and thus we don't think the translation system we use is enough. We were planning to release Japanese version after the release of some other languages. We've already started French and English in 2009, German & Spanish in 2010. We were just planning to release Russian, Italian and Dutch but now these projects are stopped and we're focusing to Japanese version.

We know the number of stamps exhibited in Stampedia is small, we also know we need more functions. But we also know people in Tohoku and Ibaragi will do their great best to reconstruction in the future. In comparison to their effort, the effort stampedia needed is very small I think. So we have to work hard to improve stampedia much more to all the philatelists in the world.

Stamps Seen Recently

Today we released some functions to stampedia. "Stamps Seen Recently" is one of them and you can see seven stamps seen recently on http://www.stampedia.net/ .

As we make this new functions , we're very encouraged with the fact many stamp detail pages are seen all over the world. It's very happy seeing the top page to see which stamps are seen by someone.

We think this function will be more interesting with some information such as how many seconds before this stamp was seen or from which country these stamps are seen. We also have found some bugs such as no image stamps and sill improve it soon.
